Franklin is an official Appalachian Trail Community, and the trail runs just west of here.
Franklin sits about a hundred miles into the Appalachian Trail for northbound hikers — far enough that the first blisters have arrived, close enough that people are still finding their stride. It’s the first real town stop in North Carolina.
Trail season
Late March into April is when the northbound bubble comes through. The town leans into it, and the trail-town atmosphere is genuinely part of the appeal if you happen to be here then.
Getting on the trail
Wayah Bald is the easiest access with a real payoff — the trail crosses the summit, and you can walk as much or as little of it as you like from the parking area. Standing Indian Campground to the south is another common jumping-off point, with the Nantahala River running through it.
If you’re thru-hiking
We’re eight minutes from downtown, which puts us close to resupply while keeping you out of a hostel bunk room. Our sites are quiet and spaced well apart, and every one has a wooden deck to pitch on. Get in touch if you need help working out logistics.
